Red light, Purple skies

The traffic light glowed red, halting the rush of vehicles beneath a sky painted in shades of purple and orange. The evening was thick with the hum of engines, the occasional honk, and the chatter of passersby. Amidst the crowd of motorcyclists waiting at the intersection, two strangers sat side by side.

Ayaan glanced to his right, where a girl in a black helmet was adjusting her gloves. He didn’t know why, but something about her presence felt oddly familiar.

Ira, unaware of his gaze, sighed as she tapped her fingers on the bike’s handle. It had been a long day. She just wanted to get home, make some instant noodles, and lose herself in a book.

Then, on instinct, she turned—and met Ayaan’s eyes.

For a moment, the noise of the city faded. Recognition flickered between them, a memory buried in time.

“Wait… Ira?” Ayaan’s voice was unsure, hesitant.

She blinked, staring at him. “Ayaan?”

The red light stretched longer than usual, as if the universe itself had paused to watch this reunion unfold.

It had been five years since college. Five years since they last spoke. Once best friends, now strangers caught at an intersection of fate.

Ayaan let out a disbelieving laugh. “What are the odds?”

Ira smiled, shaking her head. “Apparently, the same as a never-ending red light.”

The signal finally turned green, but neither of them moved. Cars honked, bikers sped past, and yet, for the first time in years, neither was in a rush to leave.

Because sometimes, life stops you at just the right moment—long enough to remind you that some people are never truly left behind.

And under a sky that had seen them part once before, they found themselves at the start of something new.
